NY Herald Zoo Hoax 1874

In the 1880s, the New York Herald was the most sensationalist newspaper in the city. The publisher said publicly that the function of a newspaper “is not to instruct but to startle and amuse.” The editorial board was not above whole-sale fabrication of disasters (all of the animals in the zoo running free in Central Park was the most infamous) to boost sales.
